DeNiro should stick to acting where he's been able to convince people that he's a master—which he isn't. Here he can't hide and this slow, uninvolving film asks the deadly question: "Why should we care?" It's not even entertaining. Then again, it could have been directed by Michael Cimino... or was it?

I found The Good Shepherd engaging, on target regarding the corporative, corrupting mentality of those who engage in spying, for the best and the worst of reasons. Although I am not a fan of Matt Damon, I gave him the benefit of doubt on this one, and found DeNiro's sense of psychological plumbing excellent. He knows how to project a corrosive state of mind, and because of that, we were able to read where Damon's character was, and how and when he lost his humanity in the Devil's bargain. DeNiro is an actor's director, and that's not an easy thing to do.
