Kathi Wolfe is clearly becoming one of our nation's best essayists/reviewers. She has the secret that cannot be learned that we can only hear profound remarks if said in an off-hand way. She has the subtle art of understatement. Even tragedy benefits at her hand. I like WH AUDEN now, better than I did before, because, through this writing, he sat at a bar with Kathi finally off Mt. Olympus.

If you had been British... you would have sipped tea and done it upside down and backwards. Nice piece... I copied and pasted... 3 times over... sent it to my actors... maybe they will at least try... to do what you did... maybe.

A graceful piece of writing. Remember, Alenier is commenting on a fellow stepping into her terrain, and I believe she does so with generosity, saying "there is enough of everything to go around".

I enjoyed reading about this new approach to creating a musical production based on the life of Gertrude Stein. Obviously, she is still inspiring artists! I look forward to cornering Ms. Alenier about her impressions of the new production.

Loved Les Marcott's article on Herbie Howell from "The Nashville Sound" movie. Has anyone heard whatever happened to him?

This is the jewel that makes San Francisco the crown of jewels that it is. And Helgi Tomasson is the bright and glorious jeweler that makes it all shine. Thank you for a wonderfully written view of the glory that is to come. It should pack the house and deservedly so.

Martin Challis' essay on the dichotomy between faith and medicine could not be more pertinent. It reminds me of Joseph Campbell's statement that the only person more dangerous than the one who says, "There is no God," is the one who says, "There is no God but mine." In this age of religious, philosophical and political polarization, we must all find ways to reconcile our differences.

Miles David Moore is someone we trust. He is fair minded, and we never feel that he brings an ax into the theater to grind away sharp words. On the contrary, he is a writer whose descriptions are lyrical and elegant. Miles Moore knows character, and what makes for psychological action; and so he brings that writer's insight into the critic's seat. It is helpful to any analysis that the reviewer is a creator, himself. This way we get a merciful dissection -- taking apart the pieces of film, to see how they work. I am grateful for this kind of writing. There is objectivity; and potent blame and judgement where they are due, but not for the sake of turning a phrase. This and the NEW YORKER Magazine are the only film reviews I can read with fulfillment. For criticism is an art.
