This could have been a blockbuster indictment and a masterpiece of a movie if only, as you said, Stone didn't suffer from an "inability to trust the intelligence of his audience." Too bad he blew the opportunity. And your review of "Appaloosa" is beautiful. Thanks for that.

Perhaps, though, he owns more or less than he knows: a "Picasso" from the agile hand of Elmyr de Hory? Unrecognized fake chef d'oeuvres of Picasso, Matisse, Cézanne, Renoir etc. still populate the museums and living rooms of the world. The greatest faker of the last century did not copy, he created the masterpieces. And he did so very fast. Have a look (again) at the amusing film-essay by Orson Welles, "F for Fake", meet the master painter and see him at work. You will also meet his Ibiza neighbor, the equally brilliant literary faker Clifford Irving, who not only wrote the invented autobiography of Howard Hugues ("Hoax") but also a biography of his friend and inspiration, Elmyr de Hory. And if you rent the additional DVD from Netflix you will learn that the fake Picassos have become a collectors' item in their own right. What is more thrilling these days: a Picasso on your wall or an Elmyr de Hory that even Picasso himself could not tell apart?

Well written, Thank you. Artist to artist, I must admit that some of the most talented people I've ever known, cut hair, drive cabs, bar-tend and wait tables. We cannot afford to live within the "starving artist" niche of glory days past. We eat, sleep, drink, dream and prepare for our art of choice, before work. Most do not have the monetary support to realise their dreams, due to life as it is. I believe if you love your art, in your soul and feel you may die without doing it, you are an artist.

Intelligent article. I gather that the reviewer preferred Sellars' opera to Woolcock's version although points were made in favor of each.

They burn down your city and you sit at the TV and watch the news, while outside, a few steps away from your home, the riots continue. And they take pictures and small videos on their mobile phones to send them to YouTube and you wonder about your own responsibility while the cradle of democracy falls apart. As I listen to the helicopters flying over our house, how little did I know when I wrote this article. How little difference in those pictures back then and the photos now. How little history changes.

Why do people not see the dramatic or historical irony in using violence and chaos as a way of protesting violence and injustice? How relevant Andrea Kapsaski's article about Prague has become in light of the recent events in Athens! And how sad that mankind seems doomed to repeat the cycle of violence as an answer for its problems! Methinks that infamous Jewish carpenter would take issue. Merry Christmas, indeed!
