O Coro
(The Chorus)

Altenir Silva

Waiting for the right song! But what's the right song? It could be a Jazz song, a Rock song, a Bossa Nova, a Reggae, Pop, Rap, Merengue, Hip Hop, or Classical. Yes! It's Classical Music, specifically by Ludwig van Beethoven. The preparation of a concert is the basis of the plot of this movie directed by Werner Schumann, a Brazilian-German filmmaker based in London.

Mr. Schumann created four characters that are part of a choir. They are strangers to each other, but something about them seems to be equal: their tormented minds and tuned voices. Antonia (Silvia Monteiro), Paulo (Emanuel Martinez), Francisca (Célia Ribeiro), and Salomão (Paulo Barato) wander through a ghost metropolis, Curitiba, in southern Brazil as if they never arrived and are not aware of being there.

While they are preparing to perform with the symphony, they have to face ordinary and bitter things: like a new job in a call center for Francisca; the loneliness of Antonia, the maestro Paulo watching his mother dying in a hospital and Salomão waiting for a phone call by Beckett, or is it Godot? Anyway, no one is happy. They are miserable people waiting for a glorious song, a song that may never reach their souls, and this causes uneasiness for all of us, as all good art should do in our minds and hearts.

Silvia Monteiro

We must pay attention to the actress Silvia Monteiro who has an incredible presence in the film. She elevated her character Antonia onto a level of anguish, as if she were Blanche DuBois before meeting Stella and Stanley Kowalski in Tennessee Williams' play "A Streetcar Named Desire". Ms. Monteiro shows all that just with her eyes, while we absorb everything intently. Actually, the entire cast did a fine job. Mr. Schumann showed himself to be a talented director in his smart choices. The B&W cinematography of Felipe Meneghel is splendid and reinforces the sadness of the drama. O Coro is a movie to see and think about our soul's emptiness. And philosophically, if we get to fill it, maybe we could become superheroes for ourselves.

O Coro is available on Amazon Prime Video, US;
and Amazon Prime Video, UK.
