Production Notes
Brief Description
Homeward Bound distills into a theatrical form the stories of many women who have experienced abuse in their lives. They play begins in Mexico at the "quinceañera" of Juanita, a rite of passage into adulthood, where her father spells out her proper place as a woman in the world. She then meets a charming man from the United States, Hank Armstrong, who promises to marry her and sponsor her to become a citizen after bringing her back to his home in the mid-West. But when they arrive, he states his expectations for a wife, isolates her from her family and friends, and prevents her from learning the language that will allow her to make new connections with the outside world.
As Juanita begins to confront Hank's actions, he becomes more abusive, exercising his power over her life by threatening to have her deported and to hurt her family if she does not do what he says. Finally, Juanita escapes, and with help from Asistencia, Inc., run by Cristina Lefcadia, she is able to find the strength and support to change her life.
