Sleeping Goddess of Malta

Griselda Steiner

December 2014

Oh, ancestors, ancestors
who left a language in stone
limestone temples
stained by the sea, winds and blood.

You sleep so tenderly
on your side.
A plump woman in pleated skirts
whose breasts like happy children
rest in your arms.
Your torso curved in sensuous sleep.

The ancestors snore.

The Sleeping Goddess was found on the beautiful Mediterranean island of Malta at the Hypogeum, a subterranean temple structure dating back to the 3300 BC. The structure of the temple and huge goddess statutes testify to a matriarchal culture that worshipped the divine feminine. The Sleeping Goddess may have been an oracular figure whose dream state lead to healing and wisdom.
