The sculpture of Teerapol Saisombat is a continuation of the pattern of painting in the South-Isan region of Thailand.

The Conservation of Mural Paintings (Hoop–Tam) is a mural of Isan people. In addition to appearing on the walls of the Sim or Ubosot, the painter still draws on the exterior wall, because the Sim has a small Hoop-Tam and he can't draw the end of the story. So the painter had to draw on the exterior wall as well. Which is a good thing because those who are unable to attend the ceremony in the Sims, especially for women who follow the Isan tradition and are not allowed to enter the Sim, a sacred area for monks' activities. People have the opportunity to learn the doctrine of the Hoop-Tam outside the Sim Impressed with local art brought out into a variety of patterns, such as the patterns on the walls and chanting patterns on the ancient woven cloth. Teerapol and friends who are interested in the event have organized many exhibitions. Every time the event is fully booked before the exhibition. It's an admirable achievement.

JY. Please tell us about your study, history and work done

TS. I was born in 1991, Bangkok. when I was 12 years old, my family moved to live in Chokchai District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. I studied elementary school at Chokchai Prombutr Boriharn School, later ordained to study at Burapha Wittayanusorn School, Muang District, until the end of high school came out to study at Chokchai Samakkee School, Chokchai District. At the end of the 6th grade of high school, I took the entrance examination to Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University (NRRU) in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. I studied Visual Arts In the first year of college and basic drawing and composition. In the second year I started studying and working as well. Due to financial problems, I sought advice from Ajarn Kittichai Treeratwitcha (an advisor) asking for a job. The teacher was kind to help me find small work. We had income during my studies as well. After the third year, I chose a major in sculpture. It was art that expresses itself by sharing, sculpting, casting, and arranging other beauty elements in various media. At this time, I started submitting my works to contests. The first area I submitted for contest was the paint job category. After semester 2, I worked creatively until I knew the technique of plastering in the SCG project in Thailand. Later in 2012, I submitted my work to the 2nd Mekong Art Contest, receiving an outstanding award, receiving a shield and 50,000 baht in cash. At that time, I was very happy.

This gave me the inspiration to create more works. The 4th year was my last year. I had the opportunity to participate artwork creative youth camp project. Contemporary art work, Baan Dam, 5th edition, in Chiang Rai  and received 1 in 12 people to go to study abroad USA for 15 days after returning to exhibit at Rajadamnern Art Gallery, Bangkok. At that time, I didn't think anything. because I had to come back to work at Ajarn Kittichai's school. Later, I graduated with a bachelor's degree at the age of 22 and started working at Ajarn Kittichai's school. The work was about sharing General Buddha Monuments , but I couldn't do it, for a long time because I was in the military (going to serve the country for a full year). After being discharged, there were seniors who invited me to work together . I have to say this at this age, my life was very bad, and it was at the lowest point that there was an accident, unexpected accident. A large mold fell on the middle of my back, causing an indefinite break from work. What is the care and treatment? So I decided to leave the office.

JY. Tell us about the sculptures that have been made and tell about the art of Southern Isan. Working teams that have worked together

TS. In 2019, I saw the work of one of my seniors, Somchai Jaiyen. His work is art, Buddhasilp, giving me the inspiration to want to come back to work again. But my life was not as smooth as I thought. For a while, my life changed again when my brother was lacking workers. So he  asked me to help and I went to work for him. At the same time, I shared some of the money I earned to buy cement and equipment that I would need to gradually buy. I kept doing this.

Actually, my family is Chinese. My home status is moderate, not rich, not poor, but I have to work and struggle as well. I help by sending money to home, more or less. But I always thought in my head that I like fresh stucco ( Punpun Sod). I will have to come back to work on sculpture again. I believed that one day it must be done. I have always believed in myself. Therefore I thought and looked for free time or holidays to go to the old temples in order to collect information and record it. Gradually I accumulated it little by little, doing this every time when I had the opportunity until one day luck was on my side again. In 2020, I returned home to Chokchai District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, and started working on fresh Punpun again. I had to thank my family.

My friends like to make merit very much, by offering two Buddha images a year, temples or schools, etc. to support Buddhism. Whether it's a Buddha image, a Dharma Chakra, a serpent, a lintel, a picture, a portrait or many others. I can work in many forms. In the end, I started working on the model that I liked the most since my bachelor's degree, which was the Punpun-Sod sculpture. I started making the first set of works around 6-7 pieces of the Buddha image, so I tried to post a Facebook for the group. Fortunately, one of the kind elders had hinted at my work and thus they supported one of my works. So I have the energy to create more art.

JY. Your sculpture that has been submitted to contests or sent to show in various institutions is important and how it causes change and development

TS. I continued working with studying for a bachelor's degree for maximum benefit. I thought that I like old-style works. Isan, in the Ubosot there is a Hoop-Tam Isan painting. Elegance and charm of an ancient craftsman who has no knowledge of art, but can make folk art or naive, famous for its clarity, purity, and gorgeous pattern. It is unique. So I picked up on the uniqueness to create and to create works according to my style because nowadays the new generation doesn't see the value of this kind of art.

In the south of Isan, there are many cultures that come together. It is an inspiration for the work of fresh plaster: Buddha images, whether it's about colors, terracotta or various stone castles. When I work, I feel very happy because in my brain I can see images. I create work well.

In terms of pounding plaster, I have studied the formula from the pounding of mortar from Phetchaburi province with trial and error, some right, until finally, I came up with my own original recipe. That is, there will be lime, pulp, glue, and banana. When the pound is homogeneous, then it can be shared. In woodwork, I think that there is the belief of ancient people who knew. The ancient people used timber to carve a Buddha statue at leisure. When finished, it was presented as a silent offering to the temple or a vow to destiny. It is the belief of Isan people. But if it is in clay, I will think of Din Dan Kwiansoil. one of the art.

Isan style sculpture ancient sites in Thailand. I think there are a lot. One of the places that I have been able to experience and absorb is Wat Nok Ok (Wat Pathum Kongka), Pak Thong Chai District. It is an ancient temple. There is a very beautiful ceiling painting. Another temple is Chai Si Temple , Khon Kaen Province. The first thing that caught my eye was the use of color in indigo, yellow and white tones, making it comfortable to look at. The other temple, if not, I can not talk about it, is Wat Si Nuan Saeng Arom, Ubon Ratchathani Province. Inside the temple there is an old dhammas located in a pavilion or a distribution hall in Isan style. It is art in the Isan Yuan style. Really, this is the part I'm talking about. But if I think of a person, I will think of a senior, Somchai Jaiyen, who works in the Buddhist style of Isan by using clay and ceramic techniques. Each work has its own uniqueness. It's part of what made me continue to study and develop myself.

In 2021, I was given an opportunity from a senior, Mr. Thong Yaleela, to persuade me to do my work to show at the MINI SCUIPTURE @ FLOW PRIVATE GALLERY BY, the 1st Chong Charoen Group at FLOW GALLERY , Nakhon Ratchasima Province. I had created 10 works, while 6 of them had been supported by people. By the end of the event, there were many other people who had come to support the rest of my work. I have to thank you very much to see my work as unique, strange, like no others and has a charm that is worth looking at.

JY. The advancement of artists in the south of Isan, interesting Thai artists. Can you tell me about it?

TS. In 2022, I am currently exhibiting the landscape art exhibition at the Art and Culture Center. Khon Kaen University Khon Kaen Province, from 5 - 30 November 2022. There are 3 artists (Mr. Thong, Mr. Somchai and Teerapol). This show surprised me. I created 20 pieces of work and all the pieces were sold out before the actual show day. I would like to thank many people for supporting, admiring and following my work. It gives me encouragement to create new works and to develop further next year.

As for next year, I'm planning to showcase my work. And in 2024 there will be an exhibition at the Art and Culture Center, Khon Kaen University. again for sure.
