Rituals of the Summer

Philip Gerstein

[Epigraph]

When in Rome, do like the Romans.

~ An ancient proverb

There is hardly anything that is more Bostonian than spending some part of the summer "on the Cape"! We are talking: Boston, Massachusetts, and Cape Cod as the state's most distinctive geographical feature! You brave the overwhelming traffic and the enthusiastic crowds, all seeking a bit of summer living -- clean salty air over a long ocean vista, a sandy beach, a good tan and a relaxed attitude.

Relaxed mind and relaxed body, one soon finds out, also open the spirit for esthetic pleasures, be it musical entertainment...

... or a fine art of painting, embracing the Matissean "luxe, calme et volupté". This selection of work on paper, at my 2-person show on the Cape this July, surely qualified. " Uncharted Territories ", an exuberance of colors, rich textures and dynamic compositions, was exhibited at Off Main Gallery , in the village of Wellfleet.

The following snapshots invoke the summer memories of this show -- from the sunlit quiet of its installation, to the happy bustle of the day of its Opening. Enjoy!
