january 2008

It's a new year and 2008 is the first time the United States of America will have a viable female candidate running for the presidency. Whether or not Hilary Rodham Clinton secures her Democratic party nomination and manages to win over the country and the Oval office, she does represent an important time in history for the female human in Western culture.

And what better way to convey the thoughts and ideas and passions of the modern woman than through the voices of women in the Arts?

Starting with the February issue of Scene4, each month my column will feature a vibrant female artist whom I respect and admire and I believe has a unique message. They are women who will show us what art means now and how it will be shaped in the future. They are women who do not compromise their artistry. They are women who use their sexuality to both express their individual experiences and to transcend beyond their female form. They are women who are capable of changing the world around them. And through music, words and images, they are women who teach us about the human condition.

I hope you will join me in my year long celebration of women.
Until February, check out the works of these fascinating women.

Novelist Elizabeth Glibert's memoir, Eat, Pray, Love
Musician Feist's CD release, The Reminder
Actress Marion Cotillard's portrayal of Edith Piaf in Olivier Dahan's La Môm
