CLAUDINE JONES in SAN FRANCISCO

At this last glimmer of 2002, as usual, more big tickets films are crammed into a week or two with the hope that there will be nothing else to do but go to the movies as the entertainment industry attempts to shoot on through past New Year’s & on towards the Oscars. In our area we’ve got a surfeit of multiplexes & yet another opened on the 18th.  The reaction of the locals to having to pay for parking was not pretty.  We’ve also just had our local transit system switch to the Privileged pay for Reserved Parking & my own street remains one of the only not to have restricted hours so that commuters descend on us of a morning.  That won’t last though; neighborhood stickers will soon enough be added to our bumpers.

Perturbation is in the air.  The queasy feeling that we are in a fantasy land or a real life video game from which we can’t click on ‘exit’ persists even through the distractions. I received a copy of The Sims Deluxe Edition as a present from my son who works at Electronic Arts & now I have the ‘Buy Mode’ music running continuously in my head.  Apparently I don’t have much of a computer game mentality or instinct;  I’m learning, but I still don’t intuitively understand why my little bachelor keeps putting his food on the floor or why hated he hated the expensive couch I bought him. He doesn’t like the recliner either.

What do we want for ourselves this year that won’t cause our smiley faces to turn down?  What can we do for the world that won’t activate the bulldozers?
