THEATRE ROUND-UP

Renowned fringe venue, The Bush Theatre, re-opens after a little 3 month closure for refurbishment. First up is a revival of ‘Howie The Rookie’ seen there last year. Until November 11th.

‘Madame Melville’ opened recently starring the surprisingly mature Macaulay Culkin (from the ‘Home Alone’ movies) and the wondrous Irene Jacob (from the Krystof Kieslowki ‘Double Life of Veronique’ and ‘Three Colours: Blue’ films) as the 15 year old student who is seduced by his French literature tutor. At the Vaudeville until November 25th.

Shared Experience’s ‘A Doll’s House’ opens at the Ambassadors and runs until the 9th of December. Shared Experience continues their tradition of turning classic novels and plays into pieces of great theatre.

Yet more Hollywood stars abound on Shaftesbury Avenue: Daryl Hannah stars in ‘The Seven Year Itch’ made famous as a film with Marilyn Monroe.

The Almeida sees a play devised by Theatre de Complicité ‘Light’, based on a Swedish parable. Complicité’s work using the language of physical theatre has won them worldwide renown with productions such as ‘The Street Of Crocodiles’.

The Royal Court continue it’s season of young writers with a varied programme of short and long plays from writers as young as 15 years taking on themes of physical abuse in Asian families. Plays including: ‘Good-Bye Roy’, ‘Made of Stone’, ‘Drag On’ and ‘Local’.

The Soho Theatre hosts Northern Broadsides’ production of Ted Hughes’ final adaptation ‘Alcestis’, while continuing its nurturing of young and new writers in a varied programme in November. While the lunchtime slot provides time for short 20-40 minute plays, the  evening sees full-length new work. ‘Play To Win’ from Yellow Earth theatre company opens later in the month.
