The Sabattier Effect

The Photography of Jon Rendell

The "Sabattier effect", also known as "solarization" is a photographic technique that was originally discovered in film photography but can also be applied in digital photography.

The difference is the amount of exposure that the photos undergo. Solarization effect produces photos that are fully exposed therefore creating black and white photos, while the sabattier effect produces photos that are partially exposed creating different varying tones. It involves partially reversing the tones in a photograph. .

The Sabattier effect can be used creatively to produce striking and abstract images. It is often employed in art photography and can give photographs an otherworldly or surreal appearance.

Jon Rendell was born into an auteur/photog family in Melbourne, Australia, in 1957 and grew up around cameras and film. He honed his craft under renowned photographer Athol Shmith at what is now Swinburne University (Prahran Campus, Melbourne). He was always captivated by shadows and finds himself hard-wired to focusing on the transitory, abstract shapes that come and go with the available light. For more of his photography in Scene4, check the Archives.
