Two Poems

I could tell it
was going to be
an all too perfect day.
The birds didn’t wake
me up at dawn,
God didn’t give me
a pop quiz at breakfast.
No angel came
to the door demanding
to have its wing fixed.
Only four wars
broke out before noon,
I had lunch with a friend,
tangoed with two tigers.
Life was all I could dream
of and more – until
your ghost tapped my shoulder.

Don’t get tortured on me, toots.
Deadline.  Tonight.
No Day-glo yellow pity.
Deadline.  Tonight.
Baudelaire, don’t walk,
the iridescent streets
of Paris.  Deadline. Tonight.
Don’t come near me,
my blue-eyed, blond-haired
grief.  Deadline. Tonight.
No heart-throbbing blues.
Deadline.  Tonight.
