Scene4 Magazine: Claudine Jones
Claudine Jones
Zero sum

Saw Anna Deavere Smith's show:
those choreographed interviews
absorbed as song
strongly figured grace

I do not have grace:
finding that a friend got cast in something
presumably granted that rarefied mood
afforded by the comfort of being chosen—I hate.
The bad reviews come out—I rejoice

I do not have grace:
my mother has another of her spasms
playing out a new friendship
in front of me or most likely
on the phone—I curse.
That friend is lost to her
a result of her interminable fixations on
John Muir, Abe Lincoln, Brooke Shields,
Netflix and the Lord's Prayer—I rejoice.

My grandson's likeness
posted by his mom on Facebook
or by his daddy
Who does he resemble
that slight frown a bare hint
my heart searching memories

I rejoice
