Interview with Teresa Vallejo, performing in XXX

I meet Teresa Vallejo in the Pleasance bar after the matinee performance of XXX. Tonight will be their last performance in Edinburgh and tomorrow morning they will be off to Hamburg to continue their European tour.

Pablo Pakula: What has been your over all impression of the Fringe as a festival?

Teresa Vallejo: Well, I think that although it has been going on for many years, it's a very young festival. I think the street ambience is very important, the festival really lives on the streets. Edinburgh has surprised me because it is a magical city, regardless of the weather. I think its well organised (the Fringe), but there is an excess of information. (We both laugh as the table we are sitting at is completely covered with flyers.) What happens is that you end up not looking at anything, the walls are covered in posters and everyone gives you flyers and programs… There comes a point that so much advertising overwhelms you. I see that as an error.

PP: Did you have any expectations regarding the audience in Edinburgh?

TV: I imagined it would be anglosaxon, as we have realised in other places like London or Australia… so it doesn't surprise me (the fact that they are not precisely involved in the show).

PP: What was the impact XXX had in London? Has it followed you to the Fringe?

TV: At first there was a huge polemic, before the opening. There were even demonstrations against it, which seems to me ridiculous. The tabloids are all a bit hypocritical. As you know, and everyone knows, we have just been in a war for no reason, we were taken there just because… But then you put on a show, which is at the end of the day just theatre, and there is such a fuss. Never mind the public reacted well and in fact we sold out the whole run. After all it's not so serious, I mean, how many real attacks and rapes are there? Many a time we may have lunch and they are dishing out information (on television) of all that happens in the world and we just keep on eating. That is all ok, but a show like XXX alarms this much. Moreover, we are not porn actors and what you see on stage is not real sex, that's just people's imagination.

PP: I recently read that an audience member attacked one of the actors, here in Edinburgh.

TV: Ah, yes, during one of the scenes, the sadist-masochistic scene, a guy from the audience went straight to one of the actors and was going to enter the scene violently so the actor had to defend himself and push him away. Then (the guy) went into the backstage area… he was pretty drunk by the way. But similar things have happened to us elsewhere.

PP: Any anecdotes you remember?

TV: In Biarritz for example, I remember a girl came onto the stage during the threesome scene. So Dolmance (one of the characters) invited her to join the threesome but she said no and just sat down with a cigarette until the scene was over. And people have protested, and half the theatre has left… In the Netherlands for example half the audience stood up and left.

PP: The Netherlands?

TV: Yes, yes, but it was the south which seems to be quite conservative.

PP: What kind of audiences did you normally get?

TV: There is a bit of everything you know. Because the 'furero' audiences (fans of La Fura Dels Baus) always come, the regulars. But of course, they stretch over 25 years (the company celebrates this year its 25th anniversary), so you get people who are 40 and 50 years old, and people who are 18. Usually though, we get more young people.

PP: And, in Spain? What kind of reception did you have there at the opening?

TV: A very good one. We believe that Spain is a backwards country in these terms, but I think we are pioneers, specially in understanding the humour of a lot of things. XXX was a great success in south Spain or on the Canary Islands, or in some Italian cities. People followed the show with humour, sometimes with tension but it was all very good, and people participated a lot.

PP: In which sense did they participate?

TV: In every sense possible, not only in the atmosphere created in the auditorium, but afterwards when we asked for volunteers to come out… When you take tragedy to humour you can go on living many years, that's my view. When tragedy just wallows in mud, what's the point? You have to go thought life with gusto, humour and intelligence.

PP: Maybe that's one of the problems the audiences here have with getting involved, that XXX has a very Spanish, very playful sense of humour.

TV: I don't mean you have to play with serious issues. You need tact with everything. But when you see the other side of things everything is somehow funny and surreal. It's so surreal that we all die… from that point onwards, anything goes, why do we all have to die? You just have to look at things from a different perspective.

PP: In one way or the other, every show progresses. How has XXX changed since its opening?

TV: It has changed significantly because it was created in time and depending on people's reactions, scenes were rearranged. In fact, during the first six months there were almost constant changes. I am one of the 'pioneers' of XXX, together with my colleague Sonia Segura. We both have been with the show since the beginning. When we finish the tour in October it will have been two years and seven months. The other two actors changed before we went to Australia, and without wanting it to be that way, everything is different when there is someone new. Not only because it is another person, but considering the kind of show it is, so organic and visceral… You have to work very closely and intimately, and it's not easy. What we do in the show seems all very easy, as if we were doing it all our lives, but there is a kind of respect, temperance and caring for one another that takes time to build.

PP: I heard that, in order to come to the UK, XXX had to be toned down…

TV: No, that happened in Australia. All the video footage, the pornographic material, everything that was a "penetration" appearing on screen, had to be blurred, pixelised. The producer was scared we would have problems, and people were shocked regardless, so go figure…

PP: Personally, what shocked me most, more than the sex scenes, was the text. I have not read De Sade's novel, but it is definitely a revolutionary text. Do you think that is a tendency amongst audiences, do you think it is easy to remain on the surface and notice only what is sex?

TV: Yes. It saddens and angers me because I know the show loses something when we go abroad. I understand that the audience has to read the overtitles, follow the actors and watch the screen. There is no time to react, and at the end they are only left with sensations. A lot of people do not appreciate the text just because they have no time to read it. However, in Spain they could follow it.

PP: Have you performed XXX in another Spanish-speaking country?

TV: Not at all… and I have a serious problem with it. They (La Fura?) have tried it many a time and the economy there makes it very difficult. After Australia we were going to go to Buenos Aires, Mexico and Chile, and at the last minute it had to be cancelled. Barely anyone can go there. I have spoken with other companies and they tell me the same story. It would have been very interesting there because audiences love La Fura.

PP: I think the last piece La Fura managed to take to South America was their Fausto 0.3. Have you worked with them before?

TV: No, it is the first time I collaborated with La Fura. I am from Madrid, I'm not Catalan. They picked me during some casting sessions in Madrid and I have been with them since then. As I said before, it will soon be two years and a half, but it has only been for this project.

PP: How did you come into the theatre?

TV: Let me explain, I am from the world of dance. Since the age of 17 I have been on the boards. I specialised in Flamenco and at the same time, after ten years, I started studying drama and worked as an actress, mainly in classic and poetic theatre, nothing to do with this, although it is poetic in a different way. I also studied dubbing, worked on radio, a bit of cinema and some television.

PP: What interested you, what called you to work with La Fura?

TV: I ask that myself. It was a bit of a coincidence, though a friend who knows Alex Ollé, one of the directors, I went to the casting. But I might have never gone to a casting for La Fura on my own initiative.

PP: On the programme the Schauspieler Frankfurt appear as collaborators. Can you tell me how they participated in the creation of XXX?

TV: The embryo of XXX, which was not the current version, was commissioned by the Germans. They wanted a show about sex involving their own actors. La Fura then created a show that they did not like too much and it was left hanging in mid-air, but it had to be revisited. Some months went by, for theatrical and economic reasons I imagine, and Valentina Carrasco, another of the directors of La Fura, had the brainwave of doing a free version taking the Marquis De Sade as a base. They did it as a commission too but they did not think it would have such success, because it has been (XXX) the show that has had the biggest audience and the longest runs from all the pieces by La Fura.

PP: So, before XXX you had not participated in anything as revolutionary?

TV: Me? No,  the truth is I hadn't. I had to think about it a lot because I thought I would not be able to do it and I was very close to not attending the second round of castings. But it was a personal challenge and I do not regret it. I do this show because it is La Fura, because it has a quality that makes it (the experience) worth it, and to learn, and other things.

PP: Before each performance, do you still get nervous?

TV: One always gets nervous, and that's how it should be.

PP: Which is for you the most difficult moment?

TV: For me, the threesome scene is not very comfortable. I sense it as a violation/rape of womanhood and it is very hard. It is a rather violent scene. Also when we go up with the harnesses -  because I fear heights. The best scene is the one with the spaghetti, we have tons of run although at first it was a bit disgusting.

PP: To finish off, what do you think about the state of affairs of the theatre in Spain?

TV: In Madrid at least, things are rather difficult because there is a lack of funding, and people are stressed out in order to get their projects going. Catalonia is better off because there is more support and more movement.

PP: That is concerning financial issues, what about the quality of work and its direction?

TV: There are very good actors in Spain, there always has been, but television and cinema attract them more. There are people who have been in the theatre for years, but no one knows of them, however,  an instant on television does the trick. But over all I think there are high standards of work although in Madrid there is a need for more transgression. Since the Partido Popular came into office there has been a conservative atmosphere. We need a new impetus.

Claro, puestos a jugar, vente.

TV: Eso me pregunto yo.
