REN POWELL in NORWAY

Controversy once again at the National Theater in Oslo. This time the season is being criticized for its preponderance of male roles: Main Stage presents Tartuffe, The Three Musketeers, Lilly Valentine and the Norwegian Children’s favorite, Kardemommeby.

The National Stage (Den Nasjonal Scene) will present Ibsen’s Enemy of the People, Life X3 by Yasmina Reza, and Evil by Jan Guillou among other works.

Oslo Nye Teater’s offerings this season include Enigma Variations by Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt and Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus.

The traveling Riksteater will be performing another Moliére, The Imaginary Invalid as well as Salome by Oscar Wilde, and Thumbleline by H.C. Andersen.

Just a sampling of what is happening outside of Oslo:

Rogaland Teater, Stavanger presents Ibsen’s Peer Gynt in two versions (one with gender switching).

Hålogaland Teater in Tromsø will set up The Diary of Anne Frank as well as several Norwegian plays and cabarets.

Trondelag Teater is counting on Brecht’s Mother Courage.

The big event right now in the west of Norway is the International Film Festival in Haugesund. It will feature the Swedish-Norwegian film “Love Between Wars” which is based on a novel by Sigurd Hoel. One hundred films (including children’s film) will be spread over seven days and 300 events. There are also organized seminars for those in the industry. Guests will include Bille August.
