A Hand

Last time she worked a paid job

full-time admin

a morning of furious data entry

the start of painful fumbling

and that right middle finger fixed

in a semi-permanent salute

took unpaid time off—

get her fingers re-trained

on an ergonomic keyboard

to keep going

A night-class assignment

write

for twenty minutes

no computers available

A pencil would be torture

the only way—just

dictate on a cell phone

sitting staring

out in the hall

apart from the others

During rehearsal a cast member

slashed open his thumb

she had chipped a glass prop onstage

and failed to alert the crew

Decades later she overheard he

had died in miserable torment

a systematic betrayal

finally preventing

even breathing

his hands

long since useless
