I had the opportunity to come back and interview Sukit Sukrakan, an artist in the South who taught disciples that passed through many generations when he returned to his former home in Trang. Trang is a province located on the southwest coast of Thailand next to the Andaman Sea. It is a famous province with the beauty of the sea. and an abundance of forests and caves, It features tourist attractions, and Southern Thai-Chinese food in the morning time with coffee and tea.

The renovation of  Pak Meng Pier in Trang Province developed into a large port. Travel to various islands provides convenience for Thai tourism and adds much more charm to Trang.

I found that Sukit Sukrakan is still working hard as before, having renovated his house. planting teak trees and other plants. His butler who cooks food from the South comes out to make life taste admirable. There are solo exhibitions and workshops with artists from other provinces in the South continuously, together with students who came to participate in watercolor painting in other provinces after my original interview with him in Scene4, 2017. At that time, Sukit Sukrakan worked in a gallery in Phuket. I found that Sukit likes to draw different kinds of boats, which he sees in everyday situations along the Andaman coast.

When returning home to Trang he contued working on watercolor painting, But this time, he suggested, that he was starting to go back to oil painting. Personally, I'm better at it, he said, with a  lovely smile.

The following is the new interview.

JY. Please tell us about the progression of artists in the South that you have worked with. You had just traveled to work for the last time in Chumphon Province on February 16-17, 2023. What was the atmosphere of the event. Recently, I saw your poster to show your exhibition will be held in Phuket in May 2023 at the Phuket Art Club.

SS. A group of southern watercolor artists gathered from the operation of IWs Thailand with Bancha Sriwongrat as the president of the Watercolor World Thailand and appointed Direk Sikaew as the president of the Southern Watercolor Group. Most of the members were teachers and general people in the southern part of Thailand. There will be activities for people in the area of watercolor continuously. Recently, Southern Watercolor organized an activity: Chumphon Land art was drawn at the end of February. This is considered the first watercolor activity in Chumphon Province. There are workshop activities of the leading watercolor artists in Thailand who have been invited to teach watercolor to those who are interested and painting activities both inside and outside the place There is a good response.

JY. Please introduce yourself one more time.

SS. I returned to my original home in Trang in early 2018. I opened a watercolor house to be a source of learning mainly to paint with watercolors In fact, I will teach you how to draw almost every color. But the watercolor house will mainly focus on teaching painting with watercolors. During my stay in Phuket from 2013 to 2017, there were solo watercolor shows twice a year. Then there was an economic recession in 2015-2017. So I came back to live at my old house in Trang. I opened my home Bann Sii Nam to teach watercolors to students and the public who are interested in painting with watercolors.

It will mainly teach on holidays and on weekends. It has received the attention of parents whose children also want to learn to draw.

Currently, I teach watercolor painting with Nipa Sukrakan, who is my wife and a drawing teacher. Most watercolor teaching will focus on basic and important techniques, such as wet on wet, wet on dry, and dry on dry techniques, which is an important basis for teaching introductory watercolor painting using the landscape as the main image. and using the student as the center of learning. Each person who comes to study will draw a picture, but the content is different according to their ability. I mainly use the principle of observing the students, and inquire about the need to learn mainly by the instructor, setting up learning activities together with the instructor.

The important thing is that the learner will be happy with what he wants to draw. And I will not teach to draw in my style, but will allow the learners to gradually find the strengths and style of their drawing by using the drawing process according to the steps that I teach. Therefore, you will see a variety of drawing methods and styles from this method. It may be tiring for the teacher, but the students will be more than happy that we go and determine how to draw for the students. This method will occur when each student has mastered the basics of drawing that I set up first.

JY. Please tell us about the activities of Bann Sii Nam (Watercolor House).

SS. Bann Sii Nam encourages young people to participate in various painting activities on-site and off-site in order to assess themselves in their own abilities. During normal times, teaching will be emphasized only on Saturdays and Sundays. Twice a day, morning and afternoon.

In the future, I would like to have a large exhibition room to store my works that I have been painting since 1972. I have kept a lot of works. Unfortunately, many stages of the watercolor paintings' life were not desirable. Termites gnawed and ate a lot, some flooded, some disappeared in thousands of pieces. Life can only be dreamed of having a gallery... it requires a lot of capital. Investment that does not have any agency or support from any organization makes it difficult to achieve the dream

For me, it was determined that I would paint for the rest of my life as long as I breathed and share knowledge to those who come to study. Nothing more ambitious than what has been said. I would like an organization that promotes the arts to support the idea. and the work of artists who work with art seriously. It is unfortunate that society still does not see the importance of art like other countries

Success in painting is never over as long as we have breath. Every time we draw, we will develop ourselves. The more we do, the more we will grow. Life is very short. Create an equation of goodness and create works that are unique for society.
