To read Gertrude Stein’s The Making of Americans is an achievement of significance. The Steiny Road Poet accomplished that reading of the 900-plus pages pretty much by going on retreat and reading it out loud in a large room to an audience of one—herself. Much of that reading was probably unintelligible and lacking in acting acumen. Now it is possible to subscribe to Audible Audio Books and hear the 52 hours and 18 minutes from numerous professional narrators who provide all the poetic and musical inflection Stein meant to convey. One can also hear the work read by Martha H. Weller, who spoke the entire text in free-to-the-public recordings for LibriVox. Weller’s recordings run for 53 hours, 19 minutes, and 11 seconds.
One hundred years ago, in 1925, Contact Press of Paris published The Making of Americans in a limited run of 500 copies. Here is the Steiny Road to Operadom column that Scene4 published
in October 2011 on how
to read and enjoy
Stein’s
“Long Book.”
